Frequently Asked Questions

What is Barbershop Singing?
Barbershop is an a cappella type of singing. The style of music we sing has a lot of roots in the African American South, and was originally created by ear by men who hung out at local barber shops. The style has evolved continuously for over a century. Many modern songs can be "barbershopped." We are not limited to the classics like "Sweet Adeline" anymore. We sing quick, fun songs, rounds, and tags.
What's a "tag"?
A tag is a snippet of a song, usually only 4-8 measures, in 4-part harmony. Can you find the tag hidden in this webpage?
What are the parts of a Barbershop group?
In a typical 4-part harmony, you have Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass (SATB).  In Barbershop, these translate into
Tenor: the highest part,
Lead: often the melody,
Baritone: the part that "fills in" the chords,
Bass: the lowest part.
Do you still wear striped shirts, bowties, and funny hats?
No boater hats or striped vests for us. We generally wear t-shirts and jeans.
